Selection of Institute for Training

Till now, I have discussed the various ways through which one can become a Marine Engineer. In this post I am going to give a list of various colleges that give training for a person to become a Marine Engineering. One can join any of the following colleges by applying to the institute directly. But one must apply when the college declares the registration for course. For this you will have to constantly keep checking the websites of the college, or you can call directly to the college & ask them personally.

Also, if you are already sponsored by a company, then the company itself will select an institute for your training & you will have to join the same institute. Some companies may give you options, but very few companies give such options. If the sponsoring company selects a institute for you, you have no option but to compulsorily join that institute.

Moreover, you will have to pay the fees yourself for the course. The fees include everything, starting from your accommodation, food, etc., to your clothes, shoes, etc. If there is anything that you have to bring, the institute informs beforehand while taking admission, the things to be brought at the time of reporting.

Now for candidates joining an institute without any sponsorship, you have options for institutes. You can join any of the college, depending upon your preferences. Following is a list of colleges that are presently good, & also provide good placements.

  1. Tolani Maritime Institute, Pune
  2. International Maritime Institute, Delhi
  3. VELS University, Chennai
  4. Institute of Maritime Studies, Goa
  5. Samudra Institute of Maritime Studies, Mumbai
  6. Great-Eastern Institute of Maritime Studies, Pune
  7. M.E.T.I., Cochin
  8. International Maritime Academy, Chennai
  9. Chennai School of Ship Management, Chennai
  10. Hindustan Institute of Maritime Training, Chennai
These are some of the good colleges in India that provide good placements for cadets.

There are many other institutes all over India, you can select any one of them. But before taking any admission, please check the institute for its previous records of placement & training. Also check that the institute is DG Shipping approved. For a list of DG Shipping approved colleges you can visit the main site of DG Shipping.

Sponsorship is for people going on 1 year GME/TME course, not for people doing Marine Engineering 4 year course. You will have to look for placements.

and plz tell good colleges for this course.

    1. Well actually I am from mechanical engineering, so i kno this stream. For ETO you need to do some other courses, which presently i am unaware of, but shall find out and tell you about it.
But let me tell you one thing, many companies have stopped recruiting ETOs as they are making 3rd Engg. Officer responsible for electrical equipments & also an ETO is not mandatory these days onboard.

    1. What kind of eye surgery is it?
If its laser, for reducing your number, then its ok, no harm there, but if its a major surgery, then there might be some problems during selection.
But mostly it wont matter, if there was any problem & if your eyes are fine.

i'm looking for great eastern institute & anglo eastern institute for ETO course & sponsership.
sir plz tell me that these institutes r gud for me or not?
    sir plz rply...i'm really confused...
and after completion of onboard training , how much chances r there of getting job?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, they are good institutes.
ETO these days is not mandatory on board a ship, and companies are trying to cutdown manpower on boad. So the responsibility of ETO s coming on 3rd or 4th Engg.
This being said, theres still a lot of companies which still hire ETOs, also once you do d course in Great Eastern or Anglo Eastern institute, you are more likely to be hired by these companies themselves, but there might be some waiting period before joining.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No you cant, you will have to do work in engine dept only, unless later again you do the cadetship course, and ur age is below 28.
But, my advice would be, please decide properly what u actually want before starting your training.
Or if u are confused between deck & engine side, then u can do polyvalent course too, & later on decide what u actually want to continue.

  14. Shreyas sir, thank you for sharing such precious details..after going through all your blogs I have many doubts overwhelming in my mind ...Is SCI the only government company in field the of merchant navy ? If not can you please name others !! Applying for gme course via notification of SCI is a better option or applying for gme course via notification of other private company ?? What is the payband difference in SCI and other private company ?? Does SCI pay less than others?? Does an employee receives salary during vacation(off duty) for those 6 or 7 months in SCI and other private company ?? After clearing all entrance exams of a particular company and going through gme presea course do a student need to appear for MEO class 4 exam? What if student fails in this exam ? Does job in merchant navy is for limited years? Can we choose the ship type (oil, cargo, cruise etc) after being selected by company? Does SCI have other ships than oil or chemical? Can an individual devote his complete job life in field of merchant navy ..uptill 60 years of job ?? Is there a requirement of passport after being selected by company and before joining further courses or at the time of selection examination of SCI?? These are lots of questions ..I know.. If you can answer all...many students doubts can get cleared... Thank you

    ReplyDelete

    1. Whaooo...many doubts dude...but no probs...
      1. Yes SCI is the only Indian Government company for shipping, all other are private companies
      2. Apply for GME through any company, important thing is sponsorship, not the institute.
      3. In SCI you get paid in Indian Rupees, but in all other companies you get paid in $.
      4. Yes there is a much difference in salaries as compared to SCI, as in private the pay is much more.
      5. Salary received in vacations depends on company, some companies give, while some companies include it as an allowance in the main salary.
      6. Yes, after completion of pre sea course, you need to go on ship for min 6 months and then appear for MEO Class IV
      7. If you fail, you have to give it again, you will come to know all these details once you join this field.
      8. Job in this field is limited upto the age of 65 yrs.
      9. Yes you can choose the ship type, but the type you want, that type of ship the company must own, and you will have to wait till a vacancy is generated on that type of ship.
      10. Sci has all types of ships, it has a total of 80 ships of its own till date.
      11. You need a passport atleast before you join the ship, if you dont have a passport, apply as soon as possible.
      12. Hope i cleared all your doubts. Any more queries, always welcome :)

  15. Respected Sir , my height is 5.2 feets ie. 157.48 cms..and weight isn't proportional to height ie.68 kgs..as per BMI ..also I have been smoking and consuming liquor from past 3 years.. But as I am desperately interested in gme course by SCI ...I have quit smoking and drinking... I will be appearing for various companies in 2015... Online written and psychometric test are no problem for me ...but I am hell scared for medical exam ... If I continue to be sober and non smoker ... And do exercise to tone up my BMI ... Do you think I have a chance to clear medical ??? Xray scan can show tar or nicotine deposition that time even if I don't follow this bad habbit?????? My teeths are in good condition but therez tar deposition at the back side ...will the examiner reject me for this ??? Is there any method by which I can ensure that I am fulfilling all medical norms prior to my written ??? Can any private docs or dg shipping docs do all medical tests (fees paid by me) prior to written exam...I just want to make sure everything related to medical goes smooth from now only

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I dont think any of these will be a problem, unless you are a big chain smoker.
I have seen many of my batchmates smoke and drink, but it was never an issue.
Smoking and drinking arent prohibited in this field, but it should be under control.
But still if you are doubtful, you can get yourself medically checked, the cost is about 1000 rupees for all the tests, and you yourself will get to know if you are eligible or not.

      Delete
    5. You do not need a DG doctor for just a pre check up, you can visit any general doctor, and tell him to take tests as per MS (Merchant Shipping) Medical Rules 2000.
Then you will know yourself if you are eligible.

    1. Hmmm...we had 12 months training period. Maybe its 6 months on ship and 4 months training in workshops.
But you will have to confirm this from your seniors as i really dont have a clear idea of this 4+6 months. But one thing i can definitely say is that this 4+6 doesnt include waiting.
According to me, you have 8 months course, then 4 months separate training in workshops or small ships, then the waiting and then 6 months onboard training.
Confirm it though from your seniors or staff of the institute.

  42. Hello Sir , this is Ishaan Kohli from Jaipur Rajasthan .Based on the above conversation and comments I personally found your answers as genuine and helpful.I too have a question
Recently a company named Cruise line Ship management Pvt Ltd had a placement drive at Manipal University Jaipur. I made it through their selection procedure,Now they are to follow the following procedure:-
    1. medical test at Delhi
    2. Cruiseline clients offer letter followed by 1 year GME course at DG shipping of India approved Institutes costing around 5 lakhs.
    3. Posting on clients ship after successful completion of training as Trainee marine engineer for atleast 6 months followed by a Class 4 MEO exam to become 4th engineer.

    Now my question is:-
    1. Does going through this procedure is beneficial or we have to apply directly at the DG shipping of India approved Institutes provided that cruiseline is giving the offer letter of one of its clients.
2.Secondly which this is preferred by the recruiter a guy with B.tech in Mechanical + 1 Year GME course or person with B.tech in Marine engineering.
    3. What is the success ratio of class 4,3,2,1 MEO exams....means they require rigorous year long prepartion like CA or Medical Exam or they can be cleared with not that much difficulty.

Please answer to these questions...I would be highly obliged

    Thanks & Regards
