This post is specially for people wanting to join as a Marine Engineer after completing their 4 years Mechanical Engineering Degree course.
Before I begin, let me clear one important thing - Sponsorship does not mean that the company will fund your course, it only means that the company is willing to give you on-board training after the completion of your course.
Acquiring a sponsorship
There are thousands & thousands of shipping companies all over the world. But getting a sponsorship is a little difficult, but not impossible. Not all the companies offer give sponsorship, but if you are interested in a company then you can write a mail to the company to provide a sponsorship for you.
If you have already completed your course & the college hasn't provided any placement for you, then the best way to get on-board training is, use any contacts that you have in Merchant Navy. Mostly contact any Captains & Chief Engineers that are in your family or friends circle, they are your best help. If everything other fails, only contacts can help you to get a ship for training.
For people entering Marine Engineering via PGDME/GME/TME course, first apply to various companies. The application for sponsorship varies from company to company. Some companies have a specific procedure for offering sponsorships, while some companies don't.

These are some of the best companies that offer sponsorship.
Nowadays, some companies have their own institute for PGDME/GME/TME course. For these companies, you have to follow a specific procedure to get the sponsorship. The main procedure is the same:
- Register for Sponsorship
- Appear for Written Exam
- Appear for Interview
- Appear for Medical
- Qualify in all 3

To apply, first you will have to keep an eye on the websites of these companies. Mostly after June-July, ads will start appearing for registration for sponsorship to B.E./B.Tech candidates. Once you register, you will be called for written test, & the procedure will continue. Some companies will go on eliminating candidates after written, interview & medical, while some companies will declare the results of chosen candidates directly.
Each company has its exams at different time of the year, also the procedure is long, so make sure you apply for as many companies as possible, because the selection procedure may sometimes elongate as long as 4 months. It may work sometimes, but keep checking their official websites & also newspapers like The Indian Express & The Times of India for their advertisements.

My query is that what does the sponsorship actually mean? From what I understood it is the sea time required for the course completion which the company sponsors by allocating us a berth on their vessels, right? So does that mean you can opt for other institutes for your pursuing your course or is it compulsory to complete the course from the institution of the sponsoring company itself. Do they reserve the right to withdraw the sponsorship, if we opt for other institute (abroad) for completion of course?

DeleteBut u cannot opt for any other institute, u have to accept the one given to u by the sponsoring company. U can opt only if an option is given to u.
Also, companies do reserve the right to withdraw the sponsorship, which depends upon your behavior in the institute, as your confidential report is sent to the company.

If you are doing 4 yr marine engineering degree course, then there will be placements in your company. You'll have to get placed in a company through these placements so as to get onboard training.

See, after u complete your mech engg, you will have to apply to companies who are hiring b.e. mech students. Getting hired at this level i.e. after ur degree course, is nothing but ur sponsorship.
DeleteAfter that, u ll be given an institute for completing the GME course, which is of 1 yr duration. But you will have to pay your own fee, the company wont pay anythin for your admission into the institute, or even during the course.
After the successful completion of this course, you ll have to report to the comapny & then the company will send you on one of its ship for training.
There might be a waiting time even after the completion of your course, depending upon the company, some companies dont make u wait, while some companies will make u wait evn for abt a year.
But once you have a sponsorship, u atleast have a job security. During this onboard training u ll be a 5th engineer or in some companies referred to as Jr. Engineer. Later on once you come back, your next going on ship depends upon the company, on what kind of deal you have signed with the company. Most of the companies make u sign a bond for 3-5 yrs, but again the terms & conditions varies from company to company.
Also, according to me, going through a placement agency is not good in these days, as the market is down, unless the agency is well recognised. I am not demotivating you, but in this line, many try to misguide rather than help. So better try on your own right from the sponsorship, as once you get the sponsorship, you will have no tensions or worries about placement or training, or institute.

Bt thats just according to me, i dont know the present situation of the college, bt it was good during our time. Though i havent done Marine Engineering from MERI Kolkata, some of my collegues said its a good college.

(ii) I scored 51 in English in 10th but 46 in 12th ., can i eligible for GME.
Its a risk, if you ask me. If you are going for laser treatment, and if your doctor guarantees successful operation, only then go ahead.
DeleteAs to your english marks, if you produce only your 10th certificate, then there will be no problem unless if they ask for your 12th certificate.
But this should not be an issue as you are asked to produce either of the certificate, moreover, if they really find you good in your interview, then there wont be any problem.

Hmmm....first decide, as to what you want actually.
DeleteJust getting admission in MERI, Mumbai campus wont do you any good, as you will have to give placement interviews lateron.
But if you get sponsored by any company, you can request them to take your training in MERI Mumbai.
Also, having a sponsorship letter in your hand, will ease most of the things and future tensions.
My advice is to go for sponsorship first, and try requesting the company. Also theres no reason to be sad if the company doesnt give you permission for MERI Mumbai. Just go with the flow, as it doesnt really matter wat college you were in once you have the sponsorship letter. All that matters is the sponsorship.
sir i want to get seat in marine engineering ,which is the good college,i completed my diploma in mechanical actual i am a orphan upto diploma i worked in part time job and full filled my basic needs and education nextmonth i clearing my diploma .last week we got a seminar from executive ship management pte ltd informed about their institute SAMUNDRA INSTITUTE OF MARITIME . and i asked about financial help for education .and they said tha there is a facility in samundra institute we have to pay 50,000 initial fee and company sanction the loan for education .i tried in that institute but they saying age limit for lateral entry is 22years .i am 23 years now.the other universities are offering upto 25 years.sir, please inform me is there any institutes are company provide loan facility.

DeleteWell, if you are trying for Marine Engineering, let me tell you, its of 4 years.
If you are already in contact with companies giving loans, then please read their terms & conditions very attentively.
I as of now never had this query, so i really dont know about companies giving loans. But again, the company itself will not give you the loan, it'll give you a bonafide certificate so that you can get a educational loan from the bank.
But as i said, i really dont know about this. But please dont worry, i shall also find some answers on this, enquire in some places and will surely get back to you.
But again, i want to warn you here & not discourage you, the fee will be very hefty for 4 years total. So you might also want to think about future.
Also, as i said, if you are in contact with colleges providing loan itself, you can go for that option, but first, read all the conditions carefully, see the college details for their placements, as without placement you wont be able to go on ship, without which you wont be able to repay the loan. So please think of all the future possibilities & choose wisely. Meanwhile I shall also try to enquire about such facilities & get back to you soon. :)

The course fee of gme is around 1 lakh .... are dere any provisions for ppl lyk me to pursue this course wid some financial help from d company under any circumstances or oder organisations????

You can go to various organisations for financial help, or banks for loans.
Companies will give you a seat in an institution, but you will have to pay the fee yourself.

DeleteEach company has different exams. Also there will be different exams by various institutes. But just getting admissions in institutes will not ensure sponsorship.

DeleteIf its laser, for reducing your number, then its ok, no harm there, but if its a major surgery, then there might be some problems during selection.

1. The sponsorship procedure is long, depends from company to company.
DeleteOnce again, as i have told many others, m telling you also, that sponsorship is company dependent & not institute. You will have to approach shipping companies, and then go according to their procedures.
2. No, you do not need to give any CET once you get sponsorship as the sponsoring company will give you admission in an institute itself.
3. No passport needed for sponsorship, but you do need to apply n get it soon, as you will need it to apply for various documents later during the course.
4. Basically, the courses start around Jan, but in some institutes like Great-Eastern institute, there are 3 batches every year starting at 4 months apart.
It all depends on the institute. Also you may get to join the institute whose course has already started by the company.

If you are going for B.Tech Marine Engineering, you need not worry about sponsorship, as you will have placements.
DeleteThere are various institutes all over the country, you will have to choose according to your interests, like living, travelling, etc.
You will have to apply to the institutes once your results are out.
Also, some colleges will be giving admissions based on your CET, if your state has it, which again depends upon the institute.
So basically, first you need to choose the institute and then go according to its rules.

Since you have cleared the Great Eastern test, you should continue with it.

1. For ETO course after completion of Electrical Engineering will it be advisable to go in institutes like AMET/CMC Chennai, directly or still wait for sponsoring company.
The same thing in not being repeated, but above mentioned colleges claims good placement.
2. Eyesight with -1.75 & +1.5 correction is allowed or treatment is required.
Keep guiding the students.
Waiting for sponsoring company is a little better while working in some company as electrical engineer, rather than getting the courses completed and then waiting for a job.

Sponsorship is for assurity of job after the completion of course.
Companies running their own institutes are DG Approved as well.
A company institute or a normal institute will give yo the same training, except that, after the course, you will have to work on the company ships when you complete the course through a company institute, also there might be a waiting period for joining after the course.
Contact the companies in your last sem, i.e. your 8th sem.

No, since you are doing a 4 year course of Marine Engineering, you cannot get a sponsorship beforehand.

DeleteI dont know colleges in Karnataka, but you can get a CET booklet, and look into the list of colleges. The number of seats and streams will be given in the booklet.
Or you can do a Google search as well.
sir, currently I am pursuing B.E (mech engg) 8th sem which will going to be completed by the end of may. I have applied for the GME 2014 batch in Samundra Institute of Maritime Institute after surveying alot about this college and i found it a very gud college. later on I came to know about the sponsorship. I checked out the SIMS as well as Executive ship management co. site to apply for the sponsorship test for GME but i couldn't find any. there are co. offering sponsorship for DNS course not for GME course. I have written a letter to both SIMS and Executive ship management co. for offering sponsorship test. should I wait for their reply? and I more thing sir, is it the institute or the co. that runs the resp institute who provide sponsorship test. coz i didn't find any of them for GME course. pls guide me . ReplyDeleteSome companies have their own institutes, while some companies offer sponsorship, while some companies have a fixed number of vacancies, which they directly take from various institutes via placements. If a company is not offering sponsorship, that means it is hiring people from various institutes and interviews. But if you ask me, if you are getting an admission in Samudra instute, it is better, as samudra has its own fleet, and there is a good chance of going on ship after the course. Dont wait if you already have admission in samudra.

And no, you cannot apply for sponsorship during course period, but you definitely can approach companies and keep trying. But once you start the course, the companies will only teel you to complete the course and return.

As you have chosen B.tech Marine, which is a 4 year course, you cannot apply for sponsorship, but you will have to go for placements through your institute. Placement depends upon your institute and you.

And one more thing, i wear specs. I have -1.5 number vision in both eyes. So are specs allowed for engineers or will i have to go through lasic?

Yes the sponsoring company will give you admission in the institute.
DeleteAlso, if you approach a institute, you will have to give some entrances and medicals.
Also, during training no problem of specs, but before going on ship, you will have to do lasic compulsorily.

Well, there is no good company for starters. As you will be junior, you will have to do all the dirty work and noone will be treating you royal. At this period, there are very few companies hiring juniors, so my suggestions is to take any company that is sending you on ship. Lateron you can choose different companies, but first what you need is to get a sponsorship, maybe it of any company.

ReplyDeleteTolani is a good institute, that much i can say. Rest about placement is upto you, how you score in your exams and other activities.
DeleteFor becoming a chief engineer, you will have to just go 1 step at a time.
First complete the course, go on sailing, and so on....

DeleteEach institute has a different date for applying, you will have to fix a institute which you want to apply, and then follow its dates for applying. But better get a sponsorship instead of applying to institutes.

My advice is that, if you have such good marks, better take admission in Mechanical Engineering, then you have more options.
DeleteLater on you can still go for Merchant Navy by doing a PG course or anything else.
But if you really want to go for merchant navy, you decide which side in merchant navy you want to pursue, engine or deck, and then i shall guide you accordingly.
sir presently i am pursuing b.tech(mechanical) and have given my 3rd year paper i know about this GME course that this is a 1 year duration course and after that we are getting placement...sir one of my relative is in marine engineering and he is a 2nd officer...sir after completing GME course we are promoted as 5th officer in a ship...sir is givinig exam compulsory to get promoted to 4th officer or there are any other ways that we can get promoted directly without giving any written exam if we have any relative working in marine line ....but sailing throughout a year...and sir 1 more thing that doea a person who have done a course of GME and a person who have done his b.tech in marine engineering gets promoted in the same post after placement.....sir if i have to give exam for 4th engineer then what are the things that i should study to clear that examination....plzzz clear my doubts sir...waiting for your reply....email id-viksila14@gmail.com plzzzz mail me sir if u don't want to say anything here....thankyou

DeleteEveryone has to start as a 5th engineer officer and give exams as required after completing the specific sea times.
For promotion exams, you can read my other articles, but first do GME and go for sailing, and exam is mandatory for all promotions.

ReplyDeleteI received the confirmation of sponsorship for gme in great eastern shipping commencing from 1st december 2014..
..the question I want to ask u is that, after completing my course and on board training ...if i didn't get placed at that time...then in how many months would I get placed in any company approximately.. is the job achievable easily achievable considering the current market need....as great eastern shipping is not offering 100% placement, which they have mention on their website.
The thing is, you may not get placed as soon as you finish your courses, but there might be a waiting time of 2 months to even 6 months.
DeleteWork hard during the course, get good grades in exam and you will be placed sooner.
Also, great eastern has given you sponsorship, that means it will send you on ship, which means you must have signed a bond with the company, so if you want to go to some other company, you will have to take a NOC from great eastern.
But if your behavior and grades are good throughout the course, then you will get placed soon.
The markets are once again coming back up slowly, till you end your course, there might be a boost in the marine field again.

DeleteYou might get selected, complete the course and even go on ship with your condition, but the main problem comes when you go and start working.
I have seen 2 of my batchmates return back from ship just because they got allergic to oils onborad.
So its better to get your condition completely fixed before going on ship.

After completion of my course, i had to wait 3 months for the official result from the University, till then i completed the Tanker Familiarization courses, and after the result was declared, i got placed on a ship within a month. I am sponsored by SCI.

Since you have done CSE, its difficult to get in this field. Very few companies take people from other than Mech branch. So you will have to find a company that take CSE, which is very difficult to find, even i dont know a company that might take students of CSE.

Delete2. I wouldnt say the work is depressing, but its the environment which is depressive sometimes, mostly depends on the people with you on ship and how they interact. In my case, my first 2 months were depressing, but when the crew and staff changed, we had lots of fun even during work.
3. To get to reputed position you atleast need 5 years in this field without any breaks.
