Courses !!!

Well as I had mentioned in my earlier posts, there are 3 ways in which you can become a Marine Engineer.
The third way even if long, is more safe and secure from job point of view.

The 3 ways in which one can become a Marine Engineer are:

1. 3 year Polyvalent B.Sc Degree Course (Nautical Sciences)
2. 4 year Marine Engineering Course after 12th
3. 1 year PGDME/GME/TME course after completing B.Mech.

1. 3 year Polyvalent B.Sc Degree Course (Nautical Sciences):

This course is a theoretical one. There are various institutes from where this course can be completed. Each institute will have its own entrance & selection process. However, after the completion of the course, one will have to go through interviews to get placed in a shipping company.
The course will comprise of 3 semesters or more depending upon the institute & the university it comes under. This course gives you the option of choosing your career in merchant navy, either on the Deck side or Engine side. After the placement in a shipping company & the completion of entire course, one will have to sail as a Deck Cadet on the Deck side, for 1 year & as a Junior engineer on Engine side, for 6 months.
After the complete sailing of 1.5 years, one will be given the chance of choosing the side as to which he/she is more comfortable with. After choosing the side, one will not be able to change the side again, thus persuaing his/her career in Merchant Navy.

2. 4 year Marine Engineering Course after 12th:

This is same as any other Engineering Degree course. This course is offered in many Private colleges as well as Govt. colleges under the Maritime University. The course consists of 8 semesters. 7 of these semesters consists training in college, while the 8th semester is in a 6 months training on ships. After the sailing the candidate has to return and give exams to qualify as a Marine Engineer

3. 1 year PGDME/GME/TME course after completing B.Mech.:

For this course, one will have to complete a Degree course in Mechanical Engineering. After the complete completion of B.E. (Mech), one can apply for this course directly in an institute, or first get a sponsorship of a shipping company & then complete the course. If one gets the sponsorship first, the company itself will send you to an institute for the course & there will be no separate selection process. However, people directly applying in institutes, will have to undergo the institute’s selection process.
After the selection, the course will commence & the duration will be of 1 year, comprising of  2 semesters. After the completion of course, the sponsored people will have to report to their respective companies for joining, while the non-sponsored people will have to undergo placement & interviews to get a job on ship as a Marine Engineer.

These are the 3 ways in which one can choose his/her career in Merchant Navy as a Marine Engineer.
